When you become parents, you’ll likely dedicate most of your time and energy to your children. Your primary goal will be to ensure they feel safe, happy, and comfortable. The life of Liza as a single parent is no exception.
She desires a home where she and her children can create beautiful memories. Liz’s foresight and determination led to the realization of Magnolia, her dream modern tiny house, named after her mother’s favorite tree.
“As a single mom, affordability has always been a challenge,” Liz explains. “This was a way for me and my girls to have our own little cottage in the woods near a lake, while keeping it affordable.”
One of the main reasons Liz wanted a modern tiny house is its mobility. Now, she and her daughters have a home that can accompany them wherever they go, in any situation. We’ll send you inspired, positive stories and personal reflections directly to your email inbox.
The first thing you’ll notice in Liz’s modern tiny house is the enormous living area sofa. Liz and her kids often use it for cuddling. Underneath are three deep drawers for additional storage space. The sofa can also serve as a guest bed.
The bar and kitchen are directly behind the living area. The glass windows can be fully opened, allowing Liz to feel a cool breeze while cooking. Liz plans to build a covered terrace connecting the bar to the outdoor dining area.
Liz also wanted a large sink in her home, which is very practical since she doesn’t have a dishwasher. However, the compromise between space and budget proved to be a wise investment.
Above all, the large sink stands out in contrast to the marble countertops and wooden floors. Liz’s kitchen is fully equipped with a propane gas stove, large refrigerator, and ample workspace, perfect for preparing meals and small gatherings.
Behind the kitchen is the bedroom with bunk beds for the children. If the girls want to spend the night with their friends, there’s plenty of space for them in the bunk beds.
At first glance, the room may seem small. However, Liz ensured that there’s plenty of storage space under the bed. You’ll also notice that the girls don’t have many toys in their room. Liz wanted the girls to take advantage of their surroundings: they have the entire neighborhood as their playground.
Like most rooms in Magnolia, the girls’ bedroom has large glass windows that make it appear more spacious and lively.
Liz’s loft is accessible via the staircase, which was designed to create voids for storage baskets. The loft features a king-size bed and a fantastic view thanks to two glass windows on either side.
On the opposite side of the house is the guest loft, which has temporarily been turned into a play loft. Liz’s daughters love spending time there, especially on rainy days.
When there are more guests at Magnolia, the guest loft sofa transforms into a spacious double bed. The cottage’s bathroom is one of the most charming areas of Liz’s home. It features a large sink, a flush toilet, and a spacious shower area separated by transparent glass.
Oliver and Cera from Summit Tiny Homes helped bring Liz’s dream home to life. Oliver and his team built the cottage, while Cera focused on the design elements.
Although the couple managed to outsource most of the work, Liz felt involved in every step of the construction process. Every part of Magnolia reflects Liz’s personality, from the color combinations to the furniture and decor. This modern tiny house isn’t just a home for a single mom and her kids.
The construction of Magnolia is Liz’s dream come true. Now she can rest until she decides to retire. No matter where her heart takes her, her girls and the modern little house will follow.
